Growth is a slow beautiful, aching process to partake in.
We emulate plants. A lot. Futurewise, we are in the dark. A lot. But God knows us and has us in his palms.
Walk with me through the garden and let’s talk. Because this week, I need fresh air. I need a divine dumping of God’s peace. And I need to get gut-wrenching honest with you.
Walking through the garden: The first photo is only a few weeks after first planting the garden. The rest below, are from last week. So it’s been about 6 weeks so far, in all.
How Writing A Book is Like Tending A Garden
Writing a book is like tending a garden because…
- You are nurturing something of time.
- Soil’s messy before blossoms burst forth.
- Pruning will find you. Pruning will refine you. (This flows to the work)
The daily toil makes a promise but we keep our feet plodding in the right direction and pray for strength along the way. We may feel there is no end in sight, but maybe this taffy-stretching process is less about the perfect end and more about how we lean into Him along the jagged way.

As I write this, I am worn.
I want refreshing words to give you, but I am running out of time.
Because it’s past mid-day and tomorrow will be today soon.
I wasn’t rushed, rushing.
Nope. Not here, today.
And this comes even having started my day off in the Word.
The day still had hard stuff to hand me. It didn’t care I read verses and prayed.
Now, I get to decide how I will move forward.
What perspective to wear.
Hard work + positive mindset look a whole lot like
slipping into dirty overalls and muddied galoshes.
I wish I had all the right answers but I don’t.
I only know one thing: God knows right where we are. This second.
Even if it’s in a rut. Seeds in ruts.
Can that be a podcast?
We may be dirtied in the face from life’s hard-balls, but nothing happens He doesn’t know about.
We may feel like we are about to bloom only to get pruned and feel shortened; “…Life’s unfair.”
But God is our Gardener and he knows it all.
So dear everything-in-our-lives causing us to stress and bent backs, we are not finished yet.
He is not finished with us yet.
“The Lord lifts the fallen and those bent beneath their loads.” Psalm 145:14 TLB
