“A house that has a library in it has a soul.” – Plato
It is 4 a.m. I have polished off a steaming cup of Café Bustelo. I will serve another cup after writing a few more paragraphs. The aroma of strong coffee takes me back to childhood when my grandparents would brew their coffee, take it to the porch for a chat, and read to each other verses from the Bible. It is a smell and a memory I will carry with me for all time.
Insert chill ambiance set to a playlist of lyric-less hip hop songs, nearby an arsenal of books and a revolving wish list of required reading.
In two hours, I will begin to ready myself for a one hour commute to my full-time job. I will listen to podcasts the entire drive there. I will park my car and jot down, in my bullet journal, all ideas that are still lingering around able to be captured on paper. The others will sail off onto another adventure which I hope will one day return from sea.
This is a typical morning and one I’ve grown accustomed to.
I’m a writer on the go.
Many writers can write from a complete place of rest. I envy that writer! I write best under pressure, after having read a mound of books or consumed an earful of podcasts.
My writing is strengthened by constantly consuming and digesting words.
I grow weary and restless when I am not faithful in writing out daily affirmations. I have a few pages, in my bullet journal, dedicated to these daily affirmations. This allows me to stay in the word more closely and helps me practice my penmanship. I’m a cursive writer and find that writing longhand helps strengthen my thoughts and keeps me from wandering off the subject.

Here are three thoughts to remember:
Don’t Get Lost
God will create rivers of words when I come upon a stumbling block which hinders my path to creativity.
“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland” (Isaiah 43:19 NLT).
I fear getting lost in the wilderness of writing. I also fear getting lost in the pages of my reading. When I’m consumed in thought instead of consumed with prayer, it is then that I remember what God promised in Isaiah.
Relate to Your Reader
Writing is where God meets the reader in grace and intellect. Writers are the vessel by which that message reaches, teaches, or blesses someone.
“Share each other’s troubles and problems, and in this way, obey the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2 NLT).
Our gift as writers is to identify our readers needs and relate to them in a way which allows them to grow. If our readers are not growing, we are not writing anything that will transcend time. The beauty of writing is that it can touch someone we’ve never met and may never have the change to meet. This is the grand place of connection.
Writing hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been purposeful. Remember your purpose.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3 NIV).
I think writer’s block is a horrible place to live. These are the times we must trust God with the gift he has given us. We may encounter a valley where the words simply do not come, or worse yet, a sinkhole where we write out our enflamed emotions instead of clear, intelligent, graceful thought. I am often that guilty party.
I admit I am often overwhelmed with being a full-time employee, writer, poet, mom, and wife. I read often and voraciously – in waiting lines, at lunchtime, at fifteen-minute breaks, before bed, in the middle of the night. That can become a chore when I become too consumed with what I’m reading and forget to pick up the pen to flesh out a thought.
I find balance when I bullet journal and keep myself in the word of God.
